Home Environmental Determining Environmental Risks

THE SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING WHETHER AN ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECT IS SIGNIFICANT IS AS FOLLOWS:

Choose a Group activity - This then has to be compared against four controls, which will help us to determine if the activity is important to us.The control areas are shown below.

Legislation - Is there legislation preventing or controlling the process?

Environmental Damage - If the process is not controlled, will it damage our environment?. If so, by how much ?

Interested parties - Who is concerned that the process is being carried out?

Quantum of potential risk - Is the process continually affecting our environment /people, or is it just now and again?

A score between 1 and 3 is given to each of the four areas therefore providing a maximum score of 12. Any score of 6 or above is considered important enough for it to be controlled in some way.

The activities determined have to be considered under three scenarios:
  • Normal operating conditions
  • Abnormal operating conditions
  • Potential Emergency.
