FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AT BAGGERIDGE BRICK PLC

Environmental Management has been given the highest priority at Baggeridge Brick because, although we know that our business activities have economic and social benefits, they also have an impact on the environment and it is our responsibility to manage this impact.

There are five fundamental principles on which environmental management in the Company is based:
Supporting the Business

It is vital that environmental management at Baggeridge Brick plc meets the overall objectives of the Company and this is achieved by understanding this model:

This demonstrates the most important principle that environmental management is not an end in itself, but is a service to support the main business processes of the Company.

The managers of those processes are responsible for all aspects of their business, including environmental management and the role of the Environment and Landsource Department is to provide the most efficient and customer-focused service.

Continuous Improvement

This is achieved by constantly studying the successes and failures of the environmental management systems and the procedures within the systems and from this study acting to improve both systems and procedures. This is explained by the following simple model:

Continuous improvement is an essential feature of the EMAS system at Hartlebury 1 and 2 factories. Everyone at the works is encouraged to propose improvements when audits are being carried out and there is a procedure for implementation.

Further continuous improvement points are highlighted throughout this report, and progress on these will be explained in future reports.

Partnership

We seek to work in partnership with all of our stakeholders, from the supplier through to the customer, including all employees, communities and investors. This philosophy means that we do not impose a standard environmental management system on each of our factories, but work in partnership to design a bespoke system for each site. Therefore it takes longer to formulate a system, but encourages learning for everyone at the site, and as the system is developed more people are engaged and motivated by their own involvement.

Partnerships with stakeholders other than works employees need to be developed further, although there has been a successful partnership with the Black Country Housing Association in the Association's innovative housing development in Dudley.

Legal Compliance

Through responsible management, we have ensured compliance with our environmental management legal requirements. The environmental management systems described later are based on a system of a risk assessment management and audit.

Sustainable Development

This report demonstrates the continued commitment of Baggeridge Brick to the effective protection of the environment. However, the Government 's framework for Sustainable Development, set out in "A Better Quality of Life", adds three other objectives:
  • Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment.
  • Social progress, which recognises the needs of all people.
  • Prudent use of natural resources.
The Government 's Sustainable Construction Strategy: "Building a Better Quality of Life " expands on this framework and says that the construction industry can contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development by:
  • Being more profitable and more competitive.
  • Delivering buildings and structures that provide greater satisfaction, well-being and value to customers and users.
  • Respecting and treating its stakeholders more fairly.
  • Enhancing and better protecting the natural environment.
  • Minimising its impact on the consumption of energy (especially carbon-based energy) and natural resources.
The concept of sustainability can now become a business driver throughout all of Baggeridge Brick 's operations. In addition to our environmental record we believe that we can demonstrate that our operations have had a beneficial, social and economic impact, including the use of our products. We shall continue to:
  • Recognise that Baggeridge Brick impacts on society through all its business activities.
  • Manage the business processes with the aim of achieving maximum positive and minimum negative economic, social and environmental impacts.
  • Measure and communicate these impacts to all our stakeholders.
